Visual Communication Application: Skitch

Skitch is a visual communication application. It enables the user to capture, edit and share screenshots (Evernote Corporation, 2018).

Skitch uses user’s previous knowledge, analogy as well as user’s long term memory because Skitch’s user interface is very similar to the user interfaces of Paint, one of Mircosoft’s first established applications, and Photoshop, one of the most used applications from today. The majority of users grow up with Microsoft applications. Furthermore, the application is taking advantage of the structure and organization as Paint had it way back then and Photoshop has it today. The tools are shown as a the left side bar menu.

According to the human cognition and learning models, Skitch involves automatization and memorization. Every opening of the application shows you automatically the options in the top bar menu as how you can start working in this application. This is one of a few visual affordances, too. It also has those black triangles in the bottom right corner of every editing tool that the user reminds of the usage based on his or her memory from Paint or Photoshop. In addition, when you click on an editing tool, the application shows you the further possibilities by replacing the actual menu with new icons for a few seconds.

Skitch’s user interface is in grey shades and consists of only a handful items. One visual affordance was named in the previous paragraph. The second visual affordances is a pin that the user can use to keep the submenu of the left bar menu open. Another visual affordance is the showing of the icon the user is using in this moment next to the pointer.

Skitch does not develop expertise. It combines taking screenshots and editing them in one tool.

People Simulator Video Game: The Sims (2000)

The Sims 1 is a strategic video game that simulates the life of people that are called Sims in their day-to-day lives (The Sims Wiki, 2018).

The Sims 1 applies procedural learning. When you start the game, it shows you where to click first by using a moving arrow. After that, the game guides you through the whole process of creating a Sim, buying a house, building a house, etc. by using pop-up windows, e.g., the Sim can use the telephone to call a cab.

The video game uses only well-known and self-explained icons - no words - according to two different floors. Moreover, it relies on visual and auditory impressions to create selective attentions, e.g., warning sounds when the bathroom is flooded.
