CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As far as information technology (IT) is concerned, the management system of many organizations in Nairobi has been greatly transformed in terms of speed, quality, quantity, market competition and profitability. This is evident in the 1970s and 1980s, when the Nairobi organizations were lagging behind in effectiveness and efficiency, compared to their Western counterparts in Britain, United States of America, Japan, Canada, Germany and France.

Today, though the Western organizations have a stronger economic and market base compared to that of organizations in Nairobi, a leap into the digital world has been strongly evident in the manner in which goods are produced, goods are sold, the services are rendered and also the way the finances are handled. Information technology has slowly erased the problems encountered in the general performance of an organization.

Though there are other organizations in Kenya which have switched to the digital world, Nairobi as a city has been selected for the study since that’s where many types of organizations with different levels of technological advancement are located.

For the past decade, Nairobi’s organizations have shown an amazing adaptation of information Technology in the minds of employees in the top level, middle level and lower level of the management.

In essence, the introduction of information Technology has changed the face of the marketing departments, finance and accounting departments, production and operation departments, and also the human resource management department, affecting the way the employees and employers perceive and regard their work.

By influencing the minds of the people working in the organization, a revolution has proved to be difficult to resist, also in the case of organizational policies.
