Sociological Imagination - Kong kids Kong kids issues in Hong Kong
Sociological imagination can be apply into varies local issues especially some current phenomenon, like Kong Kids (港孩), a special term that pops to be trendy recent years could also be explained by sociological imagination. Mills defined sociological imagination as “the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society” (Mills, 1959). And this can be applied into Kong kids by looking into the relationship between the kids and their wider growing environment around them.
According to the promise of the sociological imagination in 2012, sociological imagination enables people to understand the situation and phenomenon by experiencing in the society from the inner self to the larger scale. From Andrews, “the sociological imagination is reflective of a broader sociological preoccupation with the micro–macro linkages of society.” (Andrews, 2007) Sociological Imagination is importing in explaining sociology and it can be linked to daily life correspondently. More importantly Mills believed that the Sociological Imagination is connecting “personal troubles” to “public issues” e.g. Kong kids and Mainland tourists’ problems. It is because the problems can be interacting with the cause and other components like media.
The individual who applies the sociological imagination, as Anthony Giddens has put it, is one is able to put him/herself away from the familiar routine of his/her own experiences with daily life. Therefore, to have a Sociological imagination, a person must be able to neglect from the situation and think from an alternative point of view. It requires quitting what we are getting used to and taken for granted, and then looking at them over.
Mills believed in the power of the sociological imagination to connect "personal troubles to public issues."( Essay: the Promise of the Sociological Imagination,2012) The application of sociological imagination is the ability to see things socially and how they interact and influence each other. Public issues nowadays are shaped in many ways like the social norms, what people can gain, what others did, or even peers. Frankly, we may not be able to realize we are following these ways. To learn something and acquire a skill, we cannot simply receive what others’ gave to us, instead we should critically thinking, leave the comfort zone thus put things into a wider context. This can be explained what so many social phenomenon can be applied in the case.
