1 Introduction

In the Course Book 1 Reader of this Leadership Course we can read: "Development is always self-development. Nothing could be more absurd than for the enterprise to assume responsibility for the development of a person. The responsibility rests with individuals, their abilities, their ef­forts."1

Based on this statement, this assignment deals with the process of self­development and the methods by which this process can be supported and performed.

In times of dynamically and fast changing requirements in a rapidly chang­ing world, it is becoming increasingly important for all people to improve skills and acquire new skills.

Therefore, the need for self-development is increasing more and more.

This assignment will give an overview of the topic of self-development with its process and methods.

1.1 Target

The main target of this assignment is to give an answer to the research question: What is the state of the art process for self-development? Addi­tionally, this assignment will show in a short overview, which methods can be used to perform self-development and support the self-development process as good as possible.

2 Definitions

In this chapter the basic definitions are given, to get a common under­standing of the terminology, which is used in this assignment.

2.1 Self development

In the literature you can find a lot of definitions about self-development. To get a common understanding of self-development I will give the defini­tion taken from Moore, K.:

"Self-development is a glorious quest. It's the desire to find your own free­dom, to connect with your own sense of worth, and integrity, and happi­ness. To enjoy abundance."2

A more specific definition for self-development is given by Ostun, A.:

„Self-development can be defined, in general terms, as gaining information needed in a person's working life, acquiring new information and skills open to the change, learning for the sake of learning and maintaining all this knowledge, throughout one's life."3

In this assignment we will use the stronger definition of self-development from Ostun A., because the wider definition illustrates the process of self­development, which is shown in a later chapter, but the more specific defi­nition shows more clearly that self-development is a lifelong challenge for everyone.

2.2 Target of self development

Outgoing from the previous definition the main target for self­development is to gain information for a person's working life. Very im­portant for self-development is to know what a person should develop by his- or herself.

As shown in Figure 1, it is necessary to identify the difference between the current knowledge and the target knowledge. Only when people know the­se two components can they identify the knowledge gap which should be erased.

It is very important to think about the knowledge gap and the related ob­jectives, to get a learning target, which the self-development process is based on. Without knowing about the knowledge gap, self-development cannot be carried out successfully.

3 Process of self development

The self-development process consists of four steps: self-assessment, ac­tion planning, do and monitoring & review.

The process of self-development is a lifelong learning process, because every time when it is necessary to become acquainted with a new topic or to improve skills, this process runs again and again until the set goals are reached.

When we consider the process of self-development in more detail, it be­comes clear that the process of self-development is very similar to Dem- ing's PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) -cycle. This similarity is based on the idea that the PDCA-cycle is a cycle for quality assurance and it was adapted to the needs of self-development. Because of the mixture of quality assurance and the need for self-development in the process of self-development, it should be ensured that self-developers get a high quality result when they set themselves reachable targets.6
